(VOVworld) – US arming of the Syrian opposition and sharing of plans to strike Syrian government positions go against a joint initiative by Russia and the US to convene an international conference to resolve the current crisis in Syria. This statement was made by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Wednesday. Earlier Lavrov and US Secretary of State John Kerry, seeking a way to end the Syrian crisis, proposed an international conference without any preconditions. Lavrov has said the Syrian government supports the initiative and will appoint a delegation to attend the conference. The Syrian opposition, however, has not yet made any commitment. Lavrov said supplying weapons to the Syrian opposition is contrary to the US’s commitment to the conference.
