(VOVWORLD) - Hungary said Saturday that Russia has started delivering additional gas to the EU member. Hungary's Foreign Ministry said trade negotiations with Moscow led to an agreement under which Russia's Gazprom starts to deliver above the already contracted quantities on Friday.

Russia’s RIA news agency quoted Tamas Menczer, state secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as confirming that Gazprom has started supplying additional gas to Hungary through the TurkStream pipeline with 2.6 million cubic meters per day until the end of this month in the first phase.

He added negotiations were underway for September deliveries.

Menczer said the Hungarian government in July decided to purchase an additional 700 million cubic meters of natural gas in addition to the signed amount, adding that Hungary is in the lead in filling gas storage facilities.

Last month, the Hungarian government declared a state of emergency in the energy sector.
