(VOVWORLD) - Republicans on Wednesday had won enough seats to control the House of Representatives. Having gained control of the Senate last week, the party has secured both houses of Congress as former President Donald Trump returns to the White House.

Trump met with House Republicans on Wednesday prior to their leadership election and nominated House Speaker Mike Johnson to continue his role. Senate Republicans chose Senator John Thune to lead them in the next Congress, replacing retiring Senator Mitch McConnell, who has held the position for 18 years.

For at least the next two years, the Republican Party will have full control of the White House and both houses of Congress. This will enable Trump to aggressively push his agenda forward. Newly elected members of Congress will be sworn in on January 3 and the President-elect will be sworn in on January 20.
