"The extension of the treaty is in line with Russia's national interests as it makes it possible to maintain transparency and predictability in strategic relations between Russia and the US and preserve global strategic stability," a statement from the Kremlin press office said.

Russia and the US signed the START-3 Treaty in 2010, which took effect on February 5, 2011. According to the agreement, both sides will reduce its nuclear arsenal so that for seven years and in the future, the total armament count does not exceed 700 intercontinental ballistic missiles, submarine-launched ballistic missiles, and heavy bombers, as well as 1,550 warheads and 800 launchers.

The treaty’s extension will allow both countries to continue discussion on arms control, negotiate Strategic stability, with the participation of third parties.
