Protesters held aloft Egyptian national flag and the portrait of ousted president Mohamed Morsi, calling for an end of the military rule. The demonstrations were in response to the Muslim Brotherhood’s call for mass rallies following police suppression on Wednesday. Armed forces have been deployed across Cairo.
Demonstrators threw petrol bombs at a checkpoint near Ramses Square with police forces returning fire and killing 25 people. Violence also occurred in many other places in Egypt. According to the country’s security sources, at least 9 demonstrators loyal to Morsi were shot dead in clashes in Ismailia, while 13 demonstrators were killed and 70 injured in Damietta and Fayoum.
