Prime Minister meets UN Secretary General

(VOVworld) – Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung met with UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon on Wednesday on the sidelines of the 25th ASEAN Summit and related meetings in Myanmar. He said that as part of its international integration policy, Vietnam had been and would be a responsible member of many important UN agencies and would contribute significantly to formulating UN strategies and action programs.

Prime Minister Dung said Vietnam hoped to continue receiving policy consultations and practical assistance from the UN in the areas of sustainable poverty reduction, HIV/AIDS prevention, and climate change as well as its bid for membership of the UN Economic and Social Council for the 2016-2018 term and non-permanent membership of the UN Security Council for the 2020-2021 term.

The UN Chief expressed his hope to visit Vietnam soon to boost cooperation between the UN and Vietnam. Concerning the East Sea, he said maritime disputes should be settled on the basis of dialogue and parties concerned should not be involved in any acts that might create tensions.
