Mr. Thuong was speaking at a ceremony on Sunday to mark 20 years of the upgrade of Can Tho’s status to a centrally-run city.
Can Tho now contributes 1.2% to the national GDP and 9.5% to the GRDP annually.
“Can Tho’s authorities at all levels and residents should deeply understand the city's important role and position in ensuring socio-economic development and national defense and security for both the Mekong Delta region and the entire country. It is crucial to effectively implement Party guidelines and State policies on the development of the Mekong Delta,” President Thuong said.
He noted that Can Tho should become a nucleus urban area and a growth pole for the Mekong Delta region and the whole country, contributing to connecting Vietnam with other Mekong River states.
The President awarded Can Tho the First-Class Labor Order.
