This important annual event sets out the President’s vision, direction, and foreign policy for the coming year.
In his speech, Trump said the US under his administration has achieved continuous economic success and gained the respect of the world. He cited statistics comparing his and previous administrations, detailing the progress the US economy and society have achieved, and touting the record number of jobs created for Americans since his election. He said the unemployment rate under his administration is lower than under any administration in US history.
In foreign policy, President Trump reiterated effort to resume “American leadership throughout the world,” saying his administration reversed the policies of the previous administration on Cuba and is against President of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro. Trump also wanted to get US allies finally to help pay their share.
President Trump mentioned defending national security, combating radical Islamic terrorism, and the Middle East pace plan. He said the US is working to end America's wars in the Middle East.
This year is the 2nd consecutive year Trump has delivered a State of the Union in the middle of a political crisis. Last year, Trump had to delay his speech due to a government shutdown, which stemmed from a conflict over funding a border wall with Mexico. This speech came one day before a Senate vote on whether or not to convict Trump in his impeachment trial.
