Learning where the red lines are in the US’s relationship with China, as well as what China’s concerns and priorities are, without any concessions, is the main goal of the meeting, Biden said.
This is the first in-person meeting between the two leaders since Biden took office in 2021.
An in-person meeting was discussed during a phone call between the two leaders in July, but dropped as tension rose between the two after Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan (China) in August and Biden promised to protect Taiwan against a Chinese attack.
China ended negotiation with the US on a number of important issues, including drug-related crime and climate change prevention.
