With winds of up to 162 kilometers per hour, Jebi is storming straight for Honshu island and Osaka city. 600 flights were cancelled, along with scores of ferry and train services. Local schools and shopping malls closed for the day.

Meanwhile, tropical storm Gordon on Tuesday barreled towards the central US Gulf Coast, near the border between Louisiana and Mississippi. Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards declared a state of emergency, saying 200 Louisiana National Guardsmen were being deployed, along with high-water trucks, boats, and helicopters. The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency warned of storm surges of between 1 and 1.5 meters, and told residents to be prepared to evacuate.
