PM urges stronger action to lift EC’s “yellow card”, ensure sustainable fisheries development

(VOVWORLD) - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on Tuesday requested that the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment finalize a comprehensive report on the fight against illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, as an inspection team from the European Commission is expected to visit Vietnam this month.

He urged other relevant ministries to strengthen coordination in combating IUU fishing and promoting the sustainable development of the fisheries sector.

Localities were asked to prepare vocational transition plans for fishermen, assess the number of vessels and workers subject to career changes, and outline support policies and available resources.

Calling for a reduction in risky offshore fishing and the promotion of aquaculture and deep processing, PM Chinh emphasized that the ultimate goal is to lift the EC’s “yellow card” warning and ensure the sustainable development of Vietnam’s fisheries industry.
