PM meets Timor Leste counterpart, WEF Chairman in Jakarta

(VOVWORLD) - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and Timor Leste PM Xanana Gusmao on Tuesday agreed to increase the exchange of delegations to promote the traditional friendship and connectivity between the two countries.

During their meeting, held on the occasion of the two PMs' attendance at the 43rd ASEAN Summit and related summits in Jakarta, Indonesia, PM Chinh said Vietnam and other ASEAN members will support Timor Leste’s accession to ASEAN membership.

The two leaders emphasized the need to effectively implement signed agreements and soon complete negotiations for and ratify the bilateral Investment Protection Agreement.

They also underlined the importance of boosting cooperation in trade and investment, tourism, culture, education, and people-to-people exchanges, while studying new areas of cooperation such as agro-forestry and fisheries, digital transformation, and green transition.

Receiving Founder and Executive Chairman of the World Economic Forum (WEF) Klaus Schwab the same day, Prime Minister Chinh said Vietnam will coordinate with the WEF in implementing innovation in food, skill development, and green transition; zero-emission industrial clusters; plastic waste reduction; financing for energy transition; digital transformation; and the establishment of a Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

Vietnam will actively contribute to the Forum’s initiatives and activities, he said, and called for the WEF’s coordination in hosting activities that bring together economic experts and policy makers in the region to discuss the utilization of technological advances in economic recovery and growth.

The WEF Executive Chairman invited Prime Minister Chinh to attend WEF Davos 2024.
