PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc (in the green hat) visits the Cai Mep-Thi Vai container port complex, where Vietnam's largest deep-water port is located, March 20, 2021. |
The complex includes Gemalink, the largest deep-water port in Vietnam and one of 19 ports in the world that can receive super ships.
In January the first phase of Gemalink was completed and opened at Cai Mep-Thi Vai, with an annual capacity of 1.5 million twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU), raising the port's annual capacity to 8.3 million TEUs.
“The Cai Mep-Thi Vai port complex will facilitate logistics and other services in Vietnam and some regional countries. The complex’s average growth of 20% is remarkable” said Mr. Phuc.
Construction of the Cai Mep-Thi Vai complex was approved in 2009 and divided into two phases. Last year, it handled cargo amounting to more than 110 million tones.
Ba Ria-Vung Tau province aims to develop the port complex into an export and import gateway for the southern key economic region.
