(VOVWORLD) - Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Hanoi on Thursday after the welcoming ceremony for the Russian President, who paid a State visit to Vietnam from Wednesday to Thursday.

Party leader Nguyen Phu Trong congratulated President Putin on his re-election with a high number of votes, which he said demonstrated the Russian people’s trust in President Putin's leadership.

Mr. Trong affirmed that Vietnam always values the traditional relationship and comprehensive strategic partnership with Russia, considering it a top priority in its foreign policy.

The Vietnamese Party leader said Vietnam supports Russia's active contribution to the common work of the international community and Russia's eastward policy, adding he firmly believes that a peaceful, independent, strong and reputable Vietnam and its increasing status aligns with Russia's long-term interests in the Asia-Pacific and the world.

Regarding the situation in Ukraine, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong emphasized that Vietnam wishes for dialogue to end hostilities and resumption of negotiations to reach a peaceful solution on the basis of international law, ensuring legitimate interests of relevant parties. Vietnam is ready to contribute to promoting dialogue and negotiations in that direction, said Mr. Trong.

President Putin emphasized that Vietnam is a friend and reliable partner of Russia and the relationship between the two countries has been tested over time,

He said  developing a comprehensive strategic partnership with Vietnam is a priority in Russia's foreign policy in the Asia-Pacific region.

President Putin agreed on the directions of cooperation as proposed by General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong. Accordingly, the two countries will strengthen visits and exchanges at all levels, across Party, State, and National Assembly channels, promote economic, trade, investment, science, and technical cooperation, and boost cooperation in national defense and security. The two countries will increase exchanges and work closely to solve some difficulties and problems in accordance with international law and the specific conditions of each country.

On this occasion, Vietnam and Russia issued a Joint Declaration on deepening the comprehensive strategic partnership, affirming the principles, and setting out directions to strengthen cooperation, and develop traditional friendship and comprehensive strategic partnership between Vietnam and Russia.
