The WHO has announced that, to avoid any stigma, coronavirus variants are to be named after letters of the Greek alphabet instead of after their place of first discovery. The organization has named the four known variants Alpha, Beta, Gamma, and Delta, reflecting their order of detection. New variants should follow this pattern through the Greek alphabet.
