The South's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said it determined the launch had been carried out but did not provide details.

Two days earlier, South Korea said North Korea could launch a ballistic missile this month.

The last time North Korea tested a ballistic missile was on November 22, but the launch failed.
