South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff confirmed Saturday that North Korea has removed some of its loudspeakers from the inter-Korean border, days after South Korea took down its front-line speakers used for propaganda criticizing the North.
The South Korean military said it will continue to monitor whether North Korea’s dismantling efforts extend to all border areas, while Pyongyang has yet officially commented on the matter.
Since taking office in June, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has been considering various policy options to improve relations with North Korea, including dismantling anti-Pyongyang loudspeakers, calling for an end to the distribution of anti-North Korean leaflets, and expressing readiness to resume inter-Korean projects once communication channels are restored.
