(VOVWORLD) - Cosmologist James Peebles split the 2019 Nobel Prize in Physics with astrophysicists Michel Mayor and Didier Queloz, for work the judges said “transformed ideas about the cosmos.”

The prize recognizes their contributions to the understanding of the evolution of the universe and the Earth’s place in the cosmos.

Professor Peebles was awarded half the prize, while Professor Mayor and Professor Queloz shared their portion, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced in Stockholm on Tuesday.

The Nobel Prize in Physics was announced one day after the Nobel Prize in Medicine was presented to 2 American and 1 British scientists for research on how cells manage oxygen.
