George Washington, an influential political and military leader in US history, was Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army during the American Revolution, and an international symbol for national liberation movements and nationalism. Mount Vernon was designated an historic landmark in 1960 and is today listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
