As of Thursday morning, Taiwan has suffered a total of 310 earthquakes and aftershocks, which occur every 10 minutes on average.
The agency said this was the strongest earthquake to hit Taiwan in the past 25 years since the 1999 quake. 12 districts in Taiwan issued the highest warning level.
Rescuers are still trying to evacuate people still trapped in damaged buildings. Island officials warned that the death toll will likely rise because many people in the earthquake zone live in remote coastal or mountain communities.
