According to the Election Commission of Pakistan, Mamnoon Hussain the candidate of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League- N party (PML-N), was elected President of Pakistan. Hussain won the election with 432 votes, while Wajihuddin Ahmed, the candidate of Pakistan’s third biggest party, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) won only 77 votes. This victory for the PML-N follows a victory in the May general election when the PML-N gained the majority of seats in both the National Assembly and the Punjab Legislative Council. Hussain’s swearing-in ceremony is scheduled to take place on September 9, one day after the incumbent President Sharif Zardari, leaves office after 5 years. Zardari was successful in leading the first civil authority in Pakistan.
