Demonstrators gathered at Tahrir Square in response to a call by Iran-backed militias known as the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), demanding the withdrawal of US troops.
General Qassem Soleimani, head of the Quds force of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corp, was killed in a US air strike in Iraq on January 3, 2020.
The killing dramatically ratched up tensions in the Middle East and brought the US and Iran to the brink of war. Iran vehemently condemned the assassination and announced strong retaliation.
