At a cabinet meeting, Macron called the shooting of Algerian and Moroccan descent Nahel M 'unforgivable', but condemned attacks on police stations, schools, and town halls. French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said security forces and equipment will be strengthened to prevent further riots.
“40,000 police will be deployed across France, including 5,000 in the greater Paris region. Several technical methods are being used to respond to the threat of more violence. The government wants this case to be dealt with in a fair manner. We will also do everything we can to restore order and security throughout France.”
The town of Clamart, southwest of Paris, announced an overnight curfew in response to the rioting. The curfew will be in place from 9 pm to 6 am, starting Thursday and ending Monday morning. Several other towns shut down their public transportation networks early for fear of violence.
The Nanterre City Prosecutor said his initial investigation led him to conclude that the conditions for the legal use of a firearm were not met.
