(VOVworld) - Macedonia has closed its borders completely to illegal migrants after Slovenia, Croatia and Serbia announced new tight restrictions on migrant entry, a police official said on Wednesday. The decision has left thousands of migrants stranded on the Greek side of the Macedonian border.

Earlier, Macedonia allowed small numbers of Syrians and Iraqis through its land. The Macedonian Interior Ministry said no migrants or refugees had entered from Greece on Tuesday. Macedonia will act according to the decisions taken by other countries on the Balkan route, which enabled more than a million migrants and refugees to reach the European Union last year.
The Balkan route was completely shut down Wednesday after the EU and Turkey failed to set out a plan to ease Europe's biggest refugee crisis since World War Two.
On Wednesday Hungary extended a “state of emergency” to the whole country.
