(VOVWORLD) -Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov on Monday criticized the closure of Denmark's investigation into the 2022 sabotage of the Nord Stream gas pipeline linking Russia and Germany, calling the decision “close to absurdity”.

Peskov said Copenhagen recognized that the blasts had been an act of premeditated sabotage but decided not to go further with the investigation because the case, he claimed, involved Denmark’s close allies.

Denmark has become the second country to do so after Sweden closed a separate inquiry.

A Copenhagen police statement said the investigation led authorities to conclude that there was deliberate sabotage of the gas pipeline, but there were insufficient grounds to pursue a criminal case in Denmark.

The multibillion-dollar Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines transporting gas under the Baltic Sea were ruptured by a series of blasts in the Swedish and Danish economic zones in September 2022.
