The incident occurred while a working team of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) was in Fukushima for a safety review of the water discharge.
Last year, Japan began discharging treated wastewater from the Fukushima No.1 plant into the Pacific Ocean. The wastewater is filtered through the ALP system (Advanced Liquid Processing System) to remove most radioactive substances. The fifth discharge started last week.
According to the IAEA, data collected from the fifth discharge will be compared between laboratories of the IAEA and independent third-party laboratories in China, South Korea, Switzerland, and the US – all of which are members of the network of Analytical Laboratories for the Measurement of Environmental Radioactivity (ALMERA).
A detailed report is scheduled to be released on April 29th.
