(VOVworld) -  Government ministers from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations said Friday they have endorsed Japan's proposal for cooperation to ensure a "smart" information and communications technology network in the region. In a joint statement released after the 13th Japan-ASEAN Ministerial Policy Meeting on Cyber Security Cooperation that closed on Friday, the telecommunications and information technology ministers, agreed to cooperate with Japan to realize the "ASEAN Smart Network Initiative," which Tokyo proposed in 2011 to support the 10-member ASEAN's goal to develop its ICT capacity and enhance regional "connectivity."

Japan's vice minister for policy coordination in the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communication Masahiro Yoshizaki, said that through Japan's initiative, it will assist ASEAN countries to proliferate high-speed broadband in the region. He added that Japan will also share best practices in telecommunications and digital infrastructure development with ASEAN to overcome network traffic bottlenecks, including those that could affect internet security.
