In a recorded speech carried on Islamic State-run social media Thursday, Baghdadi said the US-led military campaign against IS in Syria and Iraq will fail. The 17-minute tape was published several days after a rumor claimed that Baghdadi had been injured or killed in US air strikes.

Martin Dempsey, Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, told a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing Thursday that the Pentagon is considering sending US ground troops to fight in Iraq and Syria. The announcement was made a week after President Barack Obama announced he was doubling the number of American military advisers in Iraq to 3,000.
