(VOVworld) - Hamid Baghaie, deputy of former Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, announced Saturday his decision to run in this year's presidential election, becoming the first candidate to contest the top job.

Hamid Baghaie was Ahmadinejad's vice president for executive affairs and head of the tourism board. He announced his candidacy in a statement saying he would run as an "independent". Last September,
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad who was president during the 2005-2013 period, announced that he would not run for the third presidency term. The current president Hassan Rouhani planned to run for a second term of presidency but there has not yet any official announcement of him.
