The workshop discussed and evaluated judicial measures for resolving East Sea disputes on the basis of the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and other international conventions. Prof. Dr. Mai Hong Quy, who is Rector of Ho Chi Minh City’s University of Law and head of the organizing board, said: “The study of judicial measures in accordance UNCLOS regulations and by arbitration procedures established at Appendix 7 of the UNCLOS is one of the choices that claimants are very keen on. On July 12, 2016, the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) which was established under Appendix 7 issued its ruling on the Philippines’ lawsuit against China”.
Participants said the PCS’s July 12 verdict has political and legal significance and will have great impacts on international relations, particularly countries in the East Sea.
