Speaking at a Commonwealth Summit in Sri Lanka on Saturday, UK Prime Minister David Cameron announced that Britain was providing a further $48 million or 30 million pounds to help the relief effort after the typhoon devastated the Philippines. Britain has also sent the aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious to help the relief effort and is now deploying an RAF C-130 aircraft to help ensure that aid workers move between worst affected areas and get the aid to those who need it most. Meanwhile, a Japanese group for Disasters’ Mitigation, which consists of 25 healthcare members, has begun their medical check-ups for residents of the worst-hit Tacloban city on Leyte Island in central Philippines. The Japanese government has ordered 3 Japan’s Self-Defense Forces’ ships and 1200 soldiers to support the relief aid in Leyte island.
