(VOVWORLD) - Vietnam seems to have successfully controlled the second wave of COVID-19 while many other countries, including Indonesia, are still struggling with the first wave. Last week, Indonesian media said the country can learn from what Vietnam has done.

The Kompas newspaper on Sunday highlighted how Vietnam has overcome the coronavirus resurgence, a continuation of its series of articles on Vietnam’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. It attributed Vietnam’s success to the government’s rapid, precise response measures and the support of the Vietnamese population, according to British research firm YouGov.

Kompas acknowledged Vietnam’s economic growth while the pandemic takes a heavy toll on the global economy. Indonesia suffered negative growth of 5.23% in the second quarter of this year while Vietnam still enjoyed a positive growth of 0.36%.

The articles quoted Yudhistira Adhinegara, economist at the Institute for Development of Economics and Finance (INDEF), as saying that Vietnam’s swift, effective response and social welfare has won the public's unanimity in following the government’s guidelines. Vietnam’s control of the coronavirus pandemic while keeping its economy afloat is a model for Indonesia, Kompas said.

Vietnam’s fight against the pandemic’s second wave was also featured in a documentary aired on Indonesia’s ANTV last week. It gave audiences answers on how Vietnam, a country bordering China, got the pandemic under control, suggesting that Indonesia should follow suit of massive COVID-19 testing which, the ANTV believed, was part of the success.
