Five civilians died after Pakistani troops fired shells into Indian-administered Kashmir, according to India. Meanwhile, Pakistan said four civilians had been killed in firing by Indian troops in Pakistan-administered Kashmir. This was one of the most serious violations of the ceasefire in the Line of Control (LoC) in Kashmir. The shootings took place on the day when Indian and Pakistani Muslims celebrated the Eid-ul-Azha Muslim festival.
All India Radio said that this was the 10th time this month that the Pakistani army had violated the LoC. An Indian army spokesperson, SD Goswami, said Pakistan’s acts aimed to undermine the upcoming elections in Jammu and Kashmir states. Meanwhile, the Pakistan army said they had fired in response to attacks by Indian soldiers.
