Hurricane Melissa leaves at least 50 dead, up to 52 billion USD in damage in Caribbean

(VOVWORLD) - Hurricane Melissa, one of the most powerful storms ever to hit the Caribbean, weakened into a post-tropical depression on Friday after devastating Jamaica,  Cuba, and Haiti, and claiming at least 50 lives across the region. Economic losses from the storm are estimated at between 48 and 52 billion USD.

Several countries, including Venezuela, along with UN agencies, have offered assistance to Cuba. The US Department of State has expressed readiness to help, though Cuban authorities said the administration of President Donald Trump has yet to make any specific or detailed proposal.

In Haiti, in addition to the loss of lives and property, authorities have warned of a potential cholera outbreak, a disease that reemerged there in 2022 and spreads through contaminated water.
