(VOVWORLD) - Vietnamese scientists will start human trials of a locally made COVID-19 vaccine in November.

A group of 60 people will get the vaccine produced by Nanogen Pharmaceutical Biotechnology, one of four companies in Vietnam studying COVID-19 vaccines. Nanogen’s vaccine has been tested on animals and was checked by the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology.

“We are gearing up to complete all the necessary procedures and facilities for the clinical trials on humans. We’ll work closely with relevant agencies to best prepare for the work,” said Nanogen’s R&D Director Do Minh Sy.

Besides Nanogen’s vaccine, another made-in-Vietnam COVID-19 vaccine is also expected to be tested on humans in early 2021. The Ministry of Health is hoping to have a commercially-viable COVID-19 vaccine by the fourth quarter of 2021. Vietnam has also registered to receive priority access for a COVID-19 vaccine when it is available on the market.
