Half-a-million pilgrims pay tribute to Vietnam’s legendary founders ​

(VOVWORLD) - Around 500,000 people from across Vietnam converged on Nghia Linh Mountain in the northern midland province of Phu Tho on Sunday to commemorate the death anniversary of the Hung Kings, the mythical founders of Vietnam.

President Nguyen Xuan Phuc offered incense in tribute to the Hung Kings, praying for peace and prosperity. He also attended the ground-breaking ceremony of the provincial cultural and art house at the Hung King Square in Viet Tri city. 

After a three-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Phu Tho authorities resumed ceremonial activities for the festival this year, instead of organizing basic rituals without crowds. This year, the festival will include many attractions including water puppet shows, exhibitions and firework displays.

The Hung Kings are believed to rule Vietnam in 2879-258 BC.

The worship of the Hung Kings was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2012.
