Half of hospitals in Gaza non-operational because of fighting

(VOVWORLD) - The World Health Organization reports that as of Sunday, Al-Shifa and Al-Quds, Gaza’s biggest hospitals, suspended operations due to a lack of fuel, and more than half of the hospitals in Gaza have stopped admitting new patients because of the intensity of the fighting.

WHO head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the WHO has restored contact with Al Shifa Hospital after more than 2 days. He said the hospital is not functioning as a hospital anymore, due to a lack of fuel and medical supplies

Dr Mohammed Obeid, a Doctors Without Borders surgeon at Al-Shifa, said the situation there is truly catastrophic.

“We can actually see the smoke around the hospital. They hit everything around the hospital and they hit the hospital many times. We are nearly sure that we are alone now, no one hears us. We want someone to give us the guarantee that they can evacuate the patients," said Obeid.

According to Doctors Without Borders, there are 40 premature babies and 17 intensive care patients at Al-Shifa who need to be evacuated urgently because the incubators and ventilators at the hospital have stopped working. 600 post-op patients need continuing medical care. Evacuation of these patients cannot be carried out due to intense fighting between Israel and Hamas.

The Palestine Red Crescent Society said Al-Quds Hospital, the second largest in Gaza, is now out of service. Medical staff are making every effort to provide care to patients despite a shortage of medical supplies, food, and water. According to a spokesman, the hospital has had no contact with the outside world for 6 or 7 days.
