(VOVWorld) – German and Greek leaders blasted Balkan countries for shutting their borders to asylum seekers on Thursday.

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras warned that the EU has no future if the route closures continue. German Chancellor Merkel said the closures are not a long-term solution to the worst migrant crisis in Europe since World War Two.

The statements came after Slovenia and Croatia barred entry to transiting asylum seekers on Wednesday, leaving thousands of migrants stranded at the Greek-Macedonian border. Last year, more than 1 million refugees traveled o Austria and Germany via the Balkan route.
