(VOVWORLD) - General To Lam, Vietnam’s Minister of Public Security, was elected the new State President of Vietnam for the 2021-2026 tenure, during the ongoing seventh session of the National Assembly in Hanoi on Wednesday.

The 15th National Assembly passed a Resolution on Wednesday morning on electing Mr. To Lam Vietnamese President for the 2021-2026 tenure. Lam got the support of 472 out of 473 or 96.92% deputies present at the 7th session of the 15th National Assembly.

To Lam took the oath of office after his election: “Under the Fatherland’s sacred red flag with a yellow star, before the National Assembly and voters nationwide, I, State President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, swear to be absolutely loyal to the Fatherland, people, and Constitution of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and strive to successfully fulfill the tasks assigned by the Party, State and people.”

In his inauguration speech before the National Assembly, President To Lam said: “Being deeply aware of my great responsibility to the Party, the State, and the people, I pledge to strictly and fully perform the tasks and authority of the State President, actively carry out Vietnam’s domestic and foreign affairs, defense and security tasks, while joining the entire Party, people, army and organizations in the political system to promote the spirit of “self-reliance, self-confidence, self-strength, self-resilience, and national pride”, and successfully implement all the Party’s policies and guidelines.”

General Lam was born in 1957 in northern Hung Yen province. He is a professor and doctor of law. 

He is a member of the Politburo (tenures XII and XIII), a member of the Party Central Committee (tenures XI, XII, XIII), and a deputy to the National Assembly (tenures XIV and XV).

He is also deputy head of the Central Steering Committee for Prevention and Control of Corruption and Negative Phenomena, a member of the National Defense and Security Council, and a member of the Central Steering Committee for Judicial Reform.

General Lam has held the post of Minister of Public Security since April 2016.
