The action took place after Gambia's president-elect Adama Barrow won the election, but refused to be recognized by current President Yahya Jammeh. Investigations have revealed that some Gambians couldn’t vote, so the country should hold another election, according to Mr. Jammeh.
West African heads of state began arriving in Gambia on Tuesday to try to convince President Jammeh to relinquish power after losing the election. Earlier, the UN Security Council called on Gambians to refrain from violence. US Ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power described the situation in Gambia as "very dangerous” because some military officers are siding with President Jammeh since his defeat.
