France, Germany send troops to Greenland

(VOVWORLD) -Troops from France and Germany were deployed to Greenland on Thursday at the request of Denmark, sending a signal to US President Donald Trump that NATO together can safeguard the security of Arctic region.

The Danish Ministry of Defense said that its armed forces and several Arctic and European allies will consider ways to increase their presence and conduct exercises in the Arctic in the coming weeks.

To date, the scale of the military buildup plan has not been announced, but initial deployments have been relatively modest. The German Ministry of Defense said it deployed a 13-person reconnaissance team to Nuuk on Thursday morning.

France said 15 soldiers from its mountain infantry unit were already in Nuuk for a military exercise. “The first French military elements are already on their way. Others will follow,” French President Emmanuel Macron said Wednesday on X.

Sweden and Norway said they will send troops to Greenland, while Finland and Poland have refused or hesitated to do so.

The White House said on Thursday that the European troops sent to Greenland won’t impact the US's goal of annexing Greenland. "I don't think troops in Europe impact the president's decision-making process, nor does it impact his goal of the acquisition of Greenland at all," Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told a briefing when asked about the deployment.
