(VOVWORLD) - Fierce fighting broke out on Saturday in Al-Fashir city between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and Sudan's paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The RSF has besieged Al-Fasher, the only capital in the five Darfur states not under their control, since May. But the heavy fighting over the past 10 days has been unprecedented.

The RSF has attacked the city from the north, east, and south. The Sudanese army has claimed to have repelled the attacks, but the RSF says it has seized military positions in Al-Fasher.

The number of casualties caused by clashes in Al-Fasher city in recent days has not been determined.

Sudan’s war has already killed tens of thousands of people, with some estimates as high as 150,000 since last April.

According to the United Nations, the conflict in Sudan has displaced 8 million people from their homes in Sudan, forced another 2 million to flee to neighboring countries, and more than 25 million people are facing severe food shortages.
