Malmstrom told a press conference in Brussels that she will get in contact with American officials to set a date for the first round as soon as possible. She said it can go quickly if they agree to start and underlined the determination of the European Commission to finish the talks before its 5-year term ends on October 31.

Earlier, a majority of EU members voted for official trade negotiations with the US, opposed by France with an abstention by Belgium.
