EU, UK unlikely to reach Brexit deal this week

(VOVWORLD) - The goal of reaching a basic Brexit agreement within 48 hours, set by British Prime Minister Boris Johnson last week, failed when negotiations ended on Sunday without any significant breakthrough.

At a meeting to announce the results to EU ambassadors in Brussels on Sunday EU chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier said there are still too many unresolved issues around customs at the Irish border for the EU to support Britain’s proposal.

According to Mr. Barnier reaching an agreement at the EU Summit will be impossible if the UK cannot come up with a more feasible proposal by Wednesday. The EU Summit begins on Thursday.
