This is one of the first plans announced on Sunday by Mariya Gabriel, EU Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society. She will spend the next two or three months drafting a public consultation on fighting fake news. Gabriel said it’s too early to talk about legislation and that internet companies like Facebook or Twitter need to take some level of action to monitor what their users post.   

The European Commission is expected to announce this month common requirements for when firms should remove illegal content that users post to their online platforms.
