The 7
th round of negotiations between the EU and Cuba will open on March 3
rd and 4
th in Havana, chaired by European chief negotiator Christian Leffler and Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister Abelardo Moreno.
The Cuba-EU relationship entered a period of tension when the EU imposed trade and diplomacy restrictions on Cuba in 1996. The EU imposed stiff sanctions on Cuba in 2003. But, the two sides are pursuing closer cooperation now that Washington and Havana have resumed bilateral ties.
