(VOVworld) - The European Union (EU) and Cuba held this their first high-level meeting on Human Rights in Brussels on Thursday. According to the Xinhua news agency, the EU was represented by Special Representative on Human Rights Stavros Lambrinidis, while Pedro Nunez Mosquera, Director General of Multilateral Affairs and International Law of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, represented the Cuban government. The meeting focused on ways to conduct a dialogue on human rights- goal, principles, methodology and formalities. The two sides agreed that the purpose of the dialogue is to raise the awareness of both sides on human rights, share experience, implement human rights, and seek bilateral and multilateral cooperation. Discussion topics included gender equality, violence against women, children rights, health care, training, education, freedom of speech, immigration, and legislation. According to a press release, both sides showed a commitment to strengthening human rights protection.
