The election took place as Egypt struggles with a slow-burning economic crisis and tries to manage the risk of spillover from the conflict in Gaza, which borders Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula.

Over 39 million Egyptians cast their ballots for al-Sisi, who is now set to serve his third – and, according to the constitution – final term in office, starting in April.

Adel Toma, a voter, said that there's a ton of work ahead for Egypt, and things aren't easy right now due to the big population and vast land. "I believe someone who's already working on it can do more than someone just starting out. Hopefully, we'll see positive changes in Egypt soon, especially in terms of the economy," Toma added.

In his new term, Mr. al-Sisi will have to tackle significant economic issues, including foreign currency shortages and rising inflation as well as geopolitical changes such as the conflict between Hamas and Israel in the Gaza Strip.
