At a May 21 webinar on connecting Vietnamese and Indian businesses, Vietnamese Ambassador to India Pham Sanh Chau said the Indian government on April 27 proposed ASEAN countries to accept the certificate of origin, a required document by the government of the country into which goods are being imported, to be issued via India’s electronic information portal. Ambassador Chau said Vietnam as Chair of ASEAN for 2020 has discussed the issue with other ASEAN countries and held that New Delhi’s proposal is in line with tariff incentives set out by the ASEAN-India Free Trade Agreement.
The Vietnamese Embassy in India has recommended the Vietnamese Government Office, the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Ministry of Finance, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to consider India’s proposal. If approved, e-certificate of origin will mark a step forward in trade ties between ASEAN and India and between Vietnam and India.
