(VOVWORLD) - The European Commission (EC) said on Friday the EU should keep its external borders closed for another 30 days due to the coronavirus pandemic.

EU Commissioner for Home Affairs Ylva Johansson said restrictions on free movement and internal border controls need to be lifted gradually before they can remove restrictions at the external borders and guarantee access to the EU for non-EU residents for non-essential travel.

Eurozone ministers on Friday formally approved 240 billion euros in credit lines to help European countries meet the crippling costs of fighting the coronavirus outbreak. The plan will be run by the Eurozone’s rescue fund, the European Stability Mechanism, and is the first major step in the EU's joint efforts to lift the bloc's economy.
